Ashton emailed me on a Sunday, asking if I could photograph their downtown elopement in Norfolk Virginia that same week. She knew it was last second, but they weren’t planning a big wedding, just the two of them and their officiant at a local park in their neighborhood.
I had just gotten back into town that day from Maui and checked my email for the first time in two weeks! Talk about timing.
I was excited to talk to her more and figure out how to make the most of their short ceremony so I got back to her right away.
No matter how simple the wedding, every bride and groom deserve to have their story documented in a beautiful and honest way.
But by Monday, their plans had changed!
Ashton updated me that they didn’t want to wait any longer to be married so they eloped at the Norfolk Courthouse earlier that day.
I was stoked for them but at the same time, I was bummed they no longer needed me!
But much to my surprise, she went on to say that photography wasn’t allowed inside the courthouse and that because of that… they had no photos of their elopement!
So they were interested in doing a newly weds session to document the occasion, celebrate, and savor the moment.
EXACTLY what a photographer wants to hear!!
To top it all off, Chris and Ashton were moving out of state that month and were on a short timeline to plan their session.
No worries, I love a good challenge!
They really wanted to remember their time spent in Norfolk, Virginia fondly. They both loved exploring the downtown area, biking to local restaurants, and walking the dogs to the nearby parks. Even though they were excited to move, they were going to miss Norfolk for sure!
That’s why I was so happy we were able to plan a perfect date night inspired walk through their neighborhood in honor of this transitioning time in their life.
Ashton even wore a beautiful, simple wedding dress and brought a fresh flower bouquet to really indulge in the opportunity! And I must say, Chris looked so sharp in his blue plaid suit.
We started at Cure coffee house, Ashton’s favorite. They ordered the house special cocktails and cheered to being married. Then we strolled through the cobblestone streets right before sunset, soaking in all the beautiful historic sites.
It’s always been a dream of mine to shoot a historic downtown elopement. I love the architecture, the colors, the landscaping. Everything is so fairytale storybook! It photographs like a dream and offers so much variety to a session.
Ashton and Chris also have two Golden Retrievers that they wanted to include in their session.
First of all, when any client asks if it’s possible to include their pups my answer is always a capital YES!!!
I love pups and they make each session so unique… even when they seem wild and crazy! Plus, it makes my job all the more fun.
So as the sun was setting, Chris and Ashton did an outfit swap to a more casual “us on a date” look, grabbed Winston and Maggie, and we finished out the night with a walk to The Pagoda overlooking the water.
These two are so sweet together and clearly know exactly how to make each other smile. It was so heartwarming to get to know their story on such a last minute basis, and I am so honored they chose me to capture this memory for them!
